The What Works Clearinghouse, established by the U.S. Department of Education, serves as a centralized reliable source of scientific evidence of what really works in education. The WWC adheres to a rigorous system to collect, screen, and identify studies of effectiveness from educational programs and products. Programs that produce positive results and receive recognition from the WWC consider this to be a major accomplishment.

The I CAN Learn® Math Program twice has been awarded top honors from the What Works Clearinghouse for program effectiveness and proven ability to raise test scores for students, especially at-risk and minority students.

In 2004, the I CAN Learn® Math Program received double check mark recognition, then considered the highest evidence of effectiveness. Products receiving the double check had to have at least one randomized controlled trail demonstrating significant effects. The I CAN Learn® Math Program had one randomized controlled trial and two quasi-experimental studies, all with positive results.

WWC revised and strengthened its evidence standards in 2007 and changed its rating system from a series of checkmarks to one of Positive effects, Potentially positive effects, No discernible effects, Mixed effects, Potentially negative effects, and Negative effects. Again, with a large-scale randomized controlled trial and five quasi-experimental studies, I CAN Learn® Math received the highest ranking, the Positive Effects rating. This top honor recognizes over a decade of scientifically-based research documenting I CAN Learn's® success in closing the achievement gap for at-risk and minority students.
